Birr
Birr town, designated a Heritage Town for its Georgian architecture, is worth a visit. It's a pleasant town to stroll through, and there is a heritage Trail you can do. There is also Birr Castle Demesne which houses the Historic Science Centre, the 17th century Great Telescope, and award-winning Gardens. Birr has the River Shannon to the west and the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the east and therefore has plenty to offer in the general area. The Tourist Office can give info on forest walks, river canoeing, river cruises, angling and golf. Clonmacnoise, the ancient monastic settlement, has to be seen, and there are several other ancient castles and monasteries in the area. Birr Tourist
Office: Shannonbridge A few miles north of Birr and on the river Shannon, the famous ancient monastic site of Clonmacnoise is located here: very popular, it gets quite busy in the summer months. This is also an important area for bog landscape, including the Blackwater Bog. |
