Connemara
From Galway, you can do a Figure of Eight tour of Connemara which, to do it justice, should take at least a few days. Travel north from Galway to Oughterard, with Lough Corrib on your right, and then head west through central Connemara, to Clifden on the west coast. An overnight stop is recommended here. From Clifden, you can take several trips. Southward are the villages of Ballyconneely and Roundstone, and the monument to fliers Alcock and Browne. To the west is the Sky Road with wonderful views. Northward is the village of Cleggan, in a unique blanket bogland area, where you can catch a ferry to Inishboffin Island. Or you can travel north-east via Connemara National Park, Letterfrack and Kylemore Abbey, to Leenane, and then south for the long drive through bogland and mountains, back to the remotest part of Connemara in Carraroe, then turn east to take the coast road back to Galway. All areas
have superb scenery of mountains, lakes and bogland, with many sights
to see along this route, and several restaurants and pubs. Clifden is
a charming village, very busy in the sumer season, with excellent restaurants
and pubs, several galleries displaying work from local artists, and some
good craft and design shops. |
