Kinsale
Kinsale dates from the 6th century when it was a monastic settlement, and since then has had an important history as a major trading post. Kinsale Harbour was the scene of several battles, with both Charles Fort on the east and James Fort on the west protecting the town from invasion. A remarkably picturesque town, Kinsale now has a serious reputation as the Gourmet capital of the South (if not all Ireland) and is also an important sailing centre. The town has a number of excellent galleries and design shops, with an emphasis on ceramics, pottery and glass. The Good Food Circle promotes the gourmet efforts of 10 or so restaurants in the town. Although these restaurants are really excellent, they are correspondingly pricey, and you may find some of the newer bistros and wine bars are better value and more creative. Kinsale
