The largest telescope in the world for over 70 years was constructed at Birr Castle in the 1840’s, and it still looks and moves as it did then. The Castle now houses Ireland’s Historic Science Centre which follows the evolution of astronomy. There is also the Castle Demesne, the largest gardens in the country, and dating from 1620.
Facilities include garden centre, gift shop, coffee shop, picnic and play areas, multi-lingual tours and guides.

The most famous ancient monastic site in Ireland, founded in 545 A.D. by Saint Ciaran. Located near Shannonbridge, north of Birr. There are ruins of a cathedral, round towers and several churches. The Visitor Centre displays ancient High Crosses and grave slabs.
Admission IR£3.50, reductions for groups, children, senior citizens.
