3km south of Ballyvaughan, are the 2 million year old Caves. There are several in the area, but these are the only ones of this size which are accessible to the public. Tour lasts 30 minutes. Also has a good cafe, book and crafts shop. Terrace cafe with views over Galway Bay; good area for walks. Local cheese is made in the dairy here.

On the north west coast of County Clare, north of Liscannor, the Cliffs are over 200 metres high and a spectacular sight. You can see Galway Bay and the Aran Islands, and on a good day the hills of Connemara.

From the fishing port of Carrigaholt in south Clare (1 hour drive from Ennis), the Dolphinwatch Carrigaholt operates several trips daily to the Shannon Estuary, to observe bootle-nose dolphins. Dedicated to their conservation, trips are conducted with respect for the dolphins’ habitat. You can also use a hydrophone to listen underwater. Trip lasts 2 hours. Tickets: IR£10, children IR£6. Book in advance.

Now a nature reserve, Dromore has 1,000 acres of woodland. The remains of the 15th century Ruan Church lie next to Dromore Lake. Tours and booklets available. Admission FREE. About 13km north of Ennis. The nearby village of Corofin, surrounded by lakes, is a good area for trout fishing.

Dunguaire Castle

Actually in County Galway on the road to Galway, Dunguaire Castle was built in 16th century and was named after the 7th century King Guaire of Connaught whose settlement was on the same site. It became another important literary meeting place in the arly 20th century for WB Yeats and associates. It is well restored and provides a tour of several rooms.

The Burren

By travelling north from Doolin on the coast road, you can see much of The Burren. Detours inland at Ballynalacken or Ballynahowen (some eventually become pathways) climb upwards and give great coastal views. Alternatively, travel inland and north from Kilfenora (has the Burren Display Centre). Along the way are Caherconnell Fort, Caherballykinvarga (iron-age stone fort) and the Poulnabrone Dolmen (2,500 B.C.).
